Most of what we call memory looks backwards. The kind that actually runs your week is the other sort: a plan that has to show up in your head at the one moment you could still act on it.
So when something gets missed, the question is not really whether you knew about it. You almost certainly did, at the time you agreed to it. What failed was the surfacing, in the narrow window where doing it was still possible. That points your effort somewhere more useful than trying to care harder: at making the thing appear in front of you at the right moment.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Let every soul consider carefully what it sends ahead for tomorrow (Quran 59:18). The looking forward is asked of you, which is a kinder frame for a missed task than asking why you did not simply remember.
You who believe! Be mindful of God, and let every soul consider carefully what it sends ahead for tomorrow; be mindful of God, for God is well aware of everything you do

What the research says
Researchers call the ability to picture a specific future situation episodic future thinking, and a review of it sets out the mechanisms and the part it plays in planning and self control. It is a review of how the capacity works rather than a trial of any technique. Read it as an account of forward looking memory, not as evidence that imagining tomorrow will fix today.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
An intention you cannot retrieve when the moment arrives is, in practice, the same as one you never had.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
A sticky note is fine for something happening within the hour. Anything further out needs something that goes off by itself, because holding a plan in mind for three days is not a thing memory does.
Saying it is done when it is not is a common next step, and it makes more sense than it looks. The lie is rarely about the parcel, it is a way out of the look on somebody's face.
For most of childhood somebody else held the diary. Parents remember the dentist, the kit, the letter that needs signing, and then one day nobody is doing that for you and the whole job is yours.
