Sometimes you cannot write it down. You are driving, your hands are full, you are halfway through a conversation. Then picture the moment in detail instead: the room you will be standing in, the object you will be looking at when you do it.
Make the picture concrete rather than worthy. Not a solemn 'I must ring the surgery' but the desk you will be sitting at, the mug beside the phone, the time on the clock when you reach for it. You are leaving something behind for a later moment to recognise. Treat it as a stopgap and capture the task properly the minute your hands are free.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Let every soul consider carefully what it sends ahead for tomorrow (Quran 59:18). A minute spent picturing tomorrow's moment is a small version of that looking forward.
You who believe! Be mindful of God, and let every soul consider carefully what it sends ahead for tomorrow; be mindful of God, for God is well aware of everything you do

What the research says
Episodic future thinking, the capacity to simulate one specific future situation, has been reviewed for its mechanisms and for the part it plays in planning and self control. Separately, two randomised trials tested imagining the wanted outcome, then the obstacle, then an if-then plan, as a way of stopping people putting off their bedtime. Neither is about remembering tasks in ADHD, and the review describes a capacity rather than testing a technique, so this is a fair thing to try and not a proven stand-in for a written note.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Recognising a scene you have already pictured is easier than dredging a plan up out of nothing.
When not to
This is the weakest of the options, so where the task carries real consequences, get it out of your head and into something external as soon as you can.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Every extra step in a task is another place to lose it. Three clicks and done beats a process with a form, an envelope and a walk to the postbox, even when the second one saves a little money.
The standard was never that you drop nothing. It is that the effort is steady and visible, and the misses that remain get some grace.
Notice how often a forgotten job turns up in the shower, or halfway up a flight of stairs. That is not coincidence: when nothing is holding your attention, the things you meant to do float up.
