A task needs smoothing at both ends. If it looks big and horrible you will not begin it, and if the middle is full of snags you will not see it through.

These are two different problems and people usually only work on one. Making the start smaller helps you begin: open the document, write one line. Clearing the middle helps you finish: the numbers already gathered, the phone somewhere else. When something keeps failing, it is worth asking which end it fails at, because the fix is not the same.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Make coats of chain mail and measure the links well (Quran 34:11). The care is put in at the making, so that using the thing later asks less of you.

saying, ‘Make coats of chain mail and measure the links well.’ ‘Do good, all of you, for I see everything you do.’

What the research says

A systematic review with meta-regression asked which specific behaviour change techniques accounted for the difference between lifestyle interventions that worked and ones that did not, rather than treating them all as one lump. The lesson worth taking is that the mechanics of how something is set up carry real weight. That analysis covered activity and eating in overweight and obese adults, so it is not a study of task design.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Getting going and keeping going draw on different things, so each one needs its own bit of help.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
