Email is the easiest place to hide. It answers back, it never runs out, and by five o'clock it feels like you worked.

What makes it such a good stand-in for real work is that the rewards come in small unpredictable bursts and almost none of it asks much of you. Your own version might not be email at all: the group chat, the news, filing, checking on a colleague who is fine. Whatever it is, the useful move is to give the demanding task a protected slot before that thing opens.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Race to do good deeds and wherever you are, God will bring you together (Quran 2:148). The racing there is towards the good thing itself, not towards whatever happens to be nearest to hand.

Each community has its own direction to which it turns: race to do good deeds and wherever you are, God will bring you together. God has power to do everything

What the research says

A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies found that holding the future in mind and valuing a delayed reward draw on overlapping brain systems, which suggests that working towards something distant is a capacity rather than a virtue. On a tired day that capacity is thinner, and the inbox is right there. This is imaging work about how the two abilities relate, not a trial of any particular way of handling email.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Small frequent rewards beat a big distant one unless you give the distant one your time first.

When not to

If answering messages genuinely is your job, the point still holds for the part of the work that needs thinking: protect that slot before the reactive part of the day takes it.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
