If the internal clock is not there, put clocks in the room. Somewhere the child can see without turning round, a timer on the desk, one on the wall by where they work.

Think of it as a prop rather than a cure. The aim is not to train an ability into existence before the child is allowed to cope, it is to let them manage today with what is available. It also helps if the adult uses one openly, since a timer that everybody uses is just a timer, while a timer only the struggling child gets is a label.

Qur’an and Sunnah

He made the sun and the moon to a precise measure (Quran 6:96). The measures were put outside people, where they could be seen and used.

He makes the dawn break; He makes the night for rest; and He made the sun and the moon to a precise measure. That is the design of the Almighty, the All Knowing

What the research says

A systematic review of how the more emotional executive functions develop between six and twelve, including the ability to wait for something better, found this literature much thinner than the work on memory and inhibition. What it does establish is that these capacities are still developing across those years. Building the environment around that seems wiser than expecting the capacity to arrive on request.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A missing internal signal can be replaced by an external one, and the external one works straight away.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
