Bring a child back with the smallest signal that does the job. A tap on the desk, a hand on the shoulder, or simply standing beside them will usually be enough.
Say a child's name across a room and everyone turns to look. Do that twenty times a day and the child learns something about themselves in front of an audience, then starts pushing back to protect their standing. A quiet signal carries the same information at almost no social cost, which is what lets you use it as often as the day actually needs. Agree the signal with the child beforehand so they know it means help rather than trouble.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Go at a moderate pace and lower your voice (Quran 31:19). The quieter correction is very often the kinder one and the one that works.
Go at a moderate pace and lower your voice, for the ugliest of all voices is the braying of asses.’

What the research says
A randomised controlled trial of non violent resistance parent training for childhood ADHD tested an approach built on steady parental presence, self regulation and structure, developed because standard programmes often lose families. It supports the general direction of responding calmly rather than escalating, in homes rather than classrooms. It does not compare a tap on the desk with a spoken word. That particular comparison has not been made.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
A correction nobody else notices costs the child nothing to accept, so it can be repeated without wearing anyone down.
When not to
Safety comes before subtlety, so speak up straight away when something has to stop.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Get the child's eyes first, then give one instruction. The page, how much, and by when, and then stop.
Move things off the to do list and into the week itself. Not write the report, but Wednesday at one, ninety minutes, write the report.
Put the demanding work where the energy is, not where the timetable happens to be convenient. Then alternate it with something they like, and break it up often.
