When you are trying to reach a feeling, stay with the actual sentence that caused it rather than paraphrasing it into something milder.

She said you are too difficult. Said again, gently, it keeps the moment alive in the room instead of turning it into a memory being reported. Reasoning about it usually arrives too early and leaves the feeling untouched. If you are helping someone, watch their face rather than your plan, and stop the moment it becomes more than they can hold.

Qur’an and Sunnah

We are well aware that your heart is weighed down by what they say (Quran 15:97). The weight is traced to the actual words that were said, which is where this work stays.

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

What the research says

A systematic review found that social anxiety was marked both by heavy use of suppression and by not getting the usual benefit from reappraisal, while depression looked more like underuse of both. So thinking your way around a feeling does not work equally well for everyone, and for some people it barely helps at all. The review pools observational studies, so it describes these patterns rather than explaining them.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A feeling can only be worked with while it is happening, and the original words are what keep it happening.

When not to

Repeating a painful sentence back can overwhelm someone, so this belongs in a setting where the person has said they want to work on it and can stop at any point.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
