Areas › Your body › Moving your body
If a movement class sounds like it comes with somebody else's beliefs attached, ask what actually happens in the room before ruling it out. Much of it can be done as plain movement.
Stretching, holding a shape, breathing steadily, none of that belongs to anyone. Teachers vary, and plenty will leave out the chanting or the framing if you ask. It is also fine to take the movements home and do them your own way. Wanting a version that sits right with your faith is a reasonable request and not an awkward one.
Qur’an and Sunnah
The servants of the Lord of Mercy are those who walk humbly on the earth (Quran 25:63). How you move is itself part of the practice, so shaping it to fit your faith is the ordinary thing to do.

What the research says
Trials of resistance training, which is to say lifting and carrying rather than anything spiritual, found a moderate reduction in depressive symptoms, and that reduction did not depend on whether strength actually improved. Plain physical effort with nothing attached to it was enough to shift symptoms in those randomised trials.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The physical work is what does the work, so what gets wrapped around it can change without the benefit going with it.

Near this one
With a small child who is struggling with both movement and speech, start with the body. Balance and steadiness come before a child can take in much language or learning.
Move just before the difficult task, not after it as a reward. Five minutes of skipping, stairs or running on the spot, then sit down to the thing.
A hard walk or a run works a little like a small dose of something. Alertness up, mood up, for a while afterwards.
