If you try to call up a good feeling and nothing arrives, you are in ordinary company. That blankness is common after a long stretch of hard years, and it is workable.
It helps to do this part with someone else at first, because another person will notice the flicker you dismissed. Look for what is reliably there rather than what is impressive: the cat, the first mouthful of tea, the fact that you turned up at all. Warmth you can find on a bad day is worth more than warmth you can only find on a good one.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'so that you may rest and seek His bounty and be grateful' (Quran 28:73). Gratitude is attached there to plain daily provision, which is about the size of thing to look for.
In His mercy He has given you night and day, so that you may rest and seek His bounty and be grateful.’

What the research says
A meta-analysis found that how a person appraises a stressful situation, and which specific emotion they feel, predicts their cortisol and immune response. So which feeling you bring is not a decorative detail. That research is about appraisal during stress studies rather than about a breathing practice, so take it as a reason to treat the feeling as part of the method, not as a measurement of it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The practice needs a feeling you can actually reach, not the best one you can imagine.
When not to
If nothing at all has felt good for weeks, raise that with a doctor or therapist, since it may be depression rather than a problem with the technique.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Before picking a calming technique, work out which way you are off. Revved up and shut down need opposite things.
Coming alive at night is a common pattern after trauma. Mornings are flat, the day is heavy, and something lifts around the time you are meant to be winding down.
Three minutes of slow breathing between one person and the next is not a break. It is part of the work.
