Three minutes of slow breathing between one person and the next is not a break. It is part of the work.

Whoever you sit with next is reading your state before they hear a word of what you say, so arriving settled is a professional act rather than a self-indulgent one. Three minutes is short enough to survive a full day. If you use a device, the trace also tells you honestly how the last hour went.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'that weighed so heavily on your back' (Quran 94:3). The load is described as landing in the body, which is where yours goes after a day of listening.

What the research says

A systematic review and network meta-analysis compared physical relaxation methods for occupational stress in healthcare workers head to head, and found several including yoga and massage reduced stress, with small differences between them. The general category is supported for people in caring work. Whether three minutes between appointments is enough is not something those studies tested.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Your own state is one of the things the other person's body responds to, so settling yourself changes the room.
