Practise this when you are calm and again when you are wound up. The second one is what makes it available in the moment you need it.

Skills learned in one state can be strangely hard to find in another, which is why people say they forgot to use it. Do the first round with someone who can help you set the thing up. After that, a few minutes on ordinary days, and a go at it during the mild version of a bad moment rather than waiting for the worst one.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Believers, remember God often' (Quran 33:41). Often, in all conditions, is the instruction, and it is the same reason this works.

What the research says

A systematic review found that regularly active and fitter people show reduced physiological reactivity to a standardised psychosocial stressor, consistent with training changing how the body meets stress. That is about physical fitness rather than breathing practice, and it is observational. It supports the general shape of the claim: repeated practice changes the response and not only the moment.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Practising while activated teaches your body to find the skill in the state where you will actually need it.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
