When you notice you are flooded, do one calming thing before any decision or hard conversation.

Do not negotiate from panic. Cool the body first, then think. The decision will still be there.

Qur’an and Sunnah

God made His tranquillity descend into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith (Quran 48:4). Reach for that descent of calm before you reach for a decision.

It was He who made His tranquillity descend into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith––the forces of the heavens and earth belong to God; He is all knowing and all wise––

What the research says

Cues of safety and calming the body restore the capacity to think and connect; decisions made from a flooded state rarely hold. Settle first, then choose.

Zaccaro, A., Piarulli, A., Laurino, M., Garbella, E., Menicucci, D., Neri, B. and Gemignani, A. (2018). How breath-control can change your life: A systematic review on psycho-physiological correlates of slow breathing. Frontiers in Human Neuroscience doi

Slow, controlled breathing shifts the nervous system toward calm and increases feelings of comfort and control.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Calming physiological arousal before acting restores access to clear thinking and choice.

Where this sits: Window of Tolerance (Siegel); polyvagal regulation.
