Being still is not the problem. The circuit that shuts you down under threat is the same one that lets you sleep deeply, digest, rest and curl up with someone you love.
So the aim is not to stay switched on. It is to be still and safe at the same time, which is a capacity you can rebuild rather than a symptom to remove. Small doses help: lying down with the light on, resting with someone else in the room, a nap in the afternoon rather than a whole night in the dark.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'It is He who made the night a garment for you, and sleep a rest' (Quran 25:47). Stillness is described as a covering and a rest, which is what it can become again.
It is He who made the night a garment for you, and sleep a rest, and made the day like a resurrection

What the research says
A measure validation study of an interoception scale found that noticing and responding to internal body sensations contributes to overall wellbeing and relates to anxiety, and it built its measure from everyday behaviours rather than laboratory tasks. Being able to notice what your body needs, and answer it, is part of the picture. It is a measure development study, so it describes a relationship rather than showing that practising this changes anything.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Stillness turns restorative rather than frightening when your body reads the situation as safe.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Three minutes of slow breathing between one person and the next is not a break. It is part of the work.
Some routes ask you to do something: breathing, moving, stretching. Others ask you to receive: music, warm water, somebody else's voice. Keep one of each, because which one you can manage depends on the day.
Excitement and panic run on the same fuel. What turns it into play is feeling safe while it happens.
