Put your right hand flat on your left upper chest, gather the skin gently and draw it downwards, then tilt your head and lift your left ear away from it. Hold there and wait.

You are making a long slow stretch up the front of the neck, not pressing on anything. Wait rather than count: somewhere in the next minute a deeper breath or a yawn usually arrives by itself, and that is the moment to let go. Then do the other side. If nothing arrives, stop anyway and try again another day.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Ibrahim counts among God's gifts 'He who cures me when I am ill' (Quran 26:80). Putting your own hands on your body and waiting carries a little of the same trust, that the healing is not coming from how hard you try.

What the research says

A meta analysis pooling randomised trials of massage for cancer pain found it reduced pain, with the authors noting that nobody can be blinded to being massaged and that trial quality was uneven. That is the general shape of the evidence for hands on work: real effects, soft methods. This particular manoeuvre has not been trialled at all.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A long steady stretch gives tissue time to give way, which a quick pull never does.

When not to

Skip this if you have had neck surgery, have known carotid or blood pressure problems, or get dizzy when you move your head, and ask a clinician first.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
