Wanting sugar, salt and something sharp at the end of a punishing week is physiology talking, not a defect in your character.

Long stretches of high stress come with real bodily consequences, and a shifted appetite is one of the visible ones. Fighting the craving head on tends to add shame to an already loaded day. The more useful move is on the stress side: a walk before the evening, a proper meal earlier, an actual end to the working day. The wanting usually eases when the load does.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'food to ward off hunger, safety to ward off fear' (Quran 106:4). Food and safety are named side by side, which is about where they sit in a body under strain.

ٱلَّذِيٓ أَطۡعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعࣲ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنۡ خَوۡفِۭ

who provides them with food to ward off hunger, safety to ward off fear

What the research says

An experimental study found that a single bout of exercise before a psychosocial stressor dampened the cortisol response, with neural evidence pointing to better negative feedback in the stress axis. Exercise seems to change how a stressor lands, not only how you feel about it afterwards. That study measured hormones in a laboratory rather than eating, so the link to cravings is reasoning rather than direct evidence.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Chronic stress changes what your body asks for, so the request makes more sense than it appears to.

When not to

If eating has become distressing or feels out of your control, that is worth taking to a doctor rather than managing alone.
