What you started with often changes as you go. The headache becomes sadness, the irritation becomes fear. Follow the new thing rather than dragging the old one along.
Say what is there now and adjust your words to match it. A shift like that is usually the most interesting moment in the whole round, because something underneath has come up to be looked at. Holding rigidly to the target you began with is the one sure way to shut that down. Check in between rounds: what is it now, and how strong.
Qur’an and Sunnah
The Qur'an describes a woman who 'conceives a light burden, going about freely, then grows heavy' (Quran 7:189). What is carried does not stay the same size, and there is no shame in saying it has changed.
It is He who created you all from one soul, and from it made its mate so that he might find comfort in her: when one [of them] lies with his wife and she conceives a light burden, going about freely, then grows heavy, they both pray to God, their Lord, ‘If You give us a good child we shall certainly be grateful,’

What the research says
A systematic review of oxytocin's prosocial effects in humans found the picture genuinely mixed, despite how confidently the mechanism gets invoked whenever people talk about closeness and calming. The honest position with any of this work is to follow what the person actually reports rather than what the theory predicts. That review is about a hormone, not about how emotional targets change during a technique.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Feelings sit in layers, so easing the top one lets the one beneath it show.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Work one side of your face or body first, then stop and compare. The difference between the treated side and the untreated one is often surprisingly clear.
Body based approaches have been linked with better physical and mental health, easier relationships, and in some settings lower use of painkillers and psychiatric medication.
Reviews do not support acupuncture as a treatment for attention difficulties. Some studies of acupuncture alongside counselling have done better than dummy needling alongside counselling, which is a more modest claim than it first sounds.
