Areas › Your body › Touch and bodywork
Pain is rarely one thing. There is the raw sensation, the memory of every other time, how you feel about it now, whether you think you can cope, and what you conclude about yourself.
Pulling those apart is useful because they do not all move together. You may not be able to change the ache itself, and you can often change how frightening it is, how much of your day it is allowed to run, and whether it gets to mean that you are broken. Try naming which layer is loudest today. Some days it is the sensation, some days it is the story.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Of Ya'qub the Qur'an says 'His eyes went white with grief and he was filled with sorrow' (Quran 12:84). The body and the feeling are named separately in the same sentence, which is how it actually is.
and he turned away from them, saying, ‘Alas for Joseph!’ His eyes went white with grief and he was filled with sorrow

What the research says
A meta analysis of randomised trials of non drug approaches in fibromyalgia found that individual symptoms improved to different degrees and that no single approach helped every feature. Pain and its companions genuinely do come apart under treatment. That work was about which interventions helped which symptoms rather than about this particular five part map.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Different layers respond to different things, so separating them gives you more than one place to push.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Body based approaches have been linked with better physical and mental health, easier relationships, and in some settings lower use of painkillers and psychiatric medication.
The same treatment in two different clinics can go two different ways, and the difference is often the people. Kind, unhurried staff who explain things get better results.
Lead with what has evidence behind it. Save the thinly supported options for when the person brings them up themselves.
