When a past hurt overwhelms you, reach toward a safe person instead of cutting yourself off. Connection is part of healing, not a distraction from it.

Trauma pulls you to withdraw, but isolation is exactly what deepens it. Letting even one trusted person stay close, when everything in you wants to hide, is a real step toward recovery.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Hold fast to God's rope all together, and do not split apart; remember how He brought your hearts together (Quran 3:103). We are made to heal held together, not alone.

Hold fast to God’s rope all together; do not split into factions. Remember God’s favour to you: you were enemies and then He brought your hearts together and you became brothers by His grace; you were about to fall into a pit of Fire and He saved you from it- in this way God makes His revelations clear to you so that you may be rightly guided

What the research says

A large body of research shows that felt social support buffers people against posttraumatic stress, while isolation is one of the strongest risk factors for it. Reaching toward a safe, responsive person, rather than sealing yourself off, is not weakness; it is one of the most protective things a survivor can do.

Greenman, P. S. and Johnson, S. M. (2012). United We Stand: Emotionally focused therapy for couples in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. Journal of Clinical Psychology doi

Safe, responsive emotional bonds buffer people against posttraumatic stress and support recovery, while a lack of social support is among the strongest risk factors for PTSD.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Safe, responsive connection helps regulate the fear that trauma leaves behind, while isolation lets it grow.

Where this sits: EFT and attachment: social support as a buffer against trauma (Greenman and Johnson).
