Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
If things fell apart when your routine did, that is information rather than a character flaw. A great deal of what was holding you together was built into the day around you.
Fixed start times, someone in the next room, a journey that marked the edges of work: these do real work, and you find out how much only when they go. Rather than trying to replace all of it with willpower, put a few pieces back deliberately. A set time you begin, one person who expects you at it, a visible end to the day.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Not so those who pray (Quran 70:22). Restlessness is named in that passage as ordinary, and what is set against it is a practice kept to at set times.
Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
What the research says
A systematic review of ADHD and procrastination finds the two are linked, while the author notes that how consistent that association is, and what drives it, remain unclear. So treat putting things off as a common companion of ADHD rather than a settled mechanism. The review does not test whether adding structure back is what fixes it.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Structure from outside supplies the prompts and deadlines your own system supplies unreliably.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.

A child who is tall for their age gets treated as older, and with ADHD their self-management may be running years behind. Pitch what you expect to the skills in front of you rather than to the height.
Plenty of people with ADHD do far better in hands-on work than in another four years of sitting in a classroom. Wanting a trade is a reasonable read of your own mind, not giving up.
Some families make it a house rule that driving happens only on a day the medication has been taken. It works because it ties a privilege to safety rather than to obedience.
