Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
A child who is tall for their age gets treated as older, and with ADHD their self-management may be running years behind. Pitch what you expect to the skills in front of you rather than to the height.
This lands hardest at school, where a big ten year old who cannot sit still reads as defiant rather than young for his skills. It is worth saying plainly in a school meeting: he looks twelve and manages himself like a seven year old, and both of those are true. The same goes at home when the biggest child gets handed responsibilities their older siblings never had at that age.
Qur’an and Sunnah
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear (Quran 2:286). Matching what is asked to what a person can actually carry is the principle, whatever they happen to look like.
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad- ‘ Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Lord, do not burden us as You burdened those before us. Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelievers.’

What the research says
A long term follow up of 515 children into young adulthood found that reports of how a young person was doing differed depending on who was asked. Judgements about the same child vary with the observer, which is a fair reason to check yours against what they can actually manage. That study followed a treatment cohort and was not measuring the effect of a child's appearance.

Why it works
People set expectations from what they can see, and the part that is running late is the part nobody can see.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
ADHD reaches into a marriage in ways couples rarely say out loud: attention drifting during a conversation that mattered, or a partner who has started to feel like an unpaid manager. It is a fair thing to talk about and to get help with.
Plenty of adults with ADHD keep tripping over rules nobody ever stated: how long a turn in a conversation lasts, when a story has gone on too long, when a joke reads differently than you meant it.
Before you decide who in front of you looks like ADHD, notice the picture you are already carrying. The loud boy gets sent for assessment and the quiet, drifting girl often does not.
