Areas › Focus, starting, and ADHD › What ADHD actually is
ADHD does not usually vanish at eighteen. The visible fidgeting often settles while the inattention stays, and the restlessness moves inwards where nobody can see it.
A teenager who has stopped bouncing off the walls can look much improved at exactly the point their workload has quadrupled, which is a poor moment to stop the support that was working. In adults it often shows up as being unable to sit through an evening, or a mind that will not stop when the body finally does. Expect the shape to keep changing and the strategies to need updating with it.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Man was truly created anxious (Quran 70:19). Restlessness is described there as part of the ordinary human make-up rather than as a sign that something has gone wrong in you.
Translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, The Qur'an, Oxford University Press, 2004.
What the research says
A European consensus statement from a large expert group holds that adult ADHD is common, persists into old age, and remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in many countries. A consensus statement is expert agreement rather than a single piece of evidence, so it carries the weight of the field's settled opinion rather than of one trial.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The part that controls the body matures faster than the part that holds attention and plans, so what other people see changes more than what is actually happening.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
More people being recognised is not the same as more people having it. What has changed over recent decades is awareness, not the number of minds built this way.
Driving is one long attention task with a very high cost of failure, so it is worth deliberately giving yourself more margin than you think you need.
ADHD reaches into a marriage in ways couples rarely say out loud: attention drifting during a conversation that mattered, or a partner who has started to feel like an unpaid manager. It is a fair thing to talk about and to get help with.
