The parts of the brain that plan and hold back keep developing into the mid twenties, so the person struggling at nineteen is not the finished version. Real gains come with time, though they do not add up to becoming someone without ADHD.
Hold that both ways. It is a reason for patience, and for not writing anybody off at nineteen. It is also a reason to plan for ongoing management rather than waiting for a finish line where all the support can be dropped. What usually changes is that the same person gets much better at working with how they are built.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Later We made him into other forms (Quran 23:14). Formation is described there as happening in stages, which is close to how this actually goes.
then We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––

What the research says
A review of long term stimulant and atomoxetine treatment in adults notes that the short term benefits are well documented while much less is known about long term outcomes. The honest position on the years ahead, then, is that the near term is better evidenced than the far. Plan for regular review rather than for a settled endpoint.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Maturing improves the machinery for planning and self-control without making it identical to anyone else's.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
The name is a little misleading. What tends to be hard is not seeing or understanding a task, it is getting your brain to switch on for something it finds no reward in, and to switch off from something it loves.
Set jobs at the level the child can manage now, then build up. A task pitched at their age that ends in a row every week mainly teaches them they are hopeless at chores.
The teenager with ADHD is often the one who admits it while everyone else produces a story. That is not worse judgement about right and wrong, it is less thinking ahead about how it will land.
