When someone cannot let go of the old rule after the rules have changed, that is the same machinery that loses their keys and drops the thread of a sentence. Stuck, not stubborn.
It shows up in small places. The game changes and they argue for the old version. The usual road is closed and the whole trip falls apart. A plan moves by an hour and the day is ruined. Calling it a shifting problem rather than a character problem changes what you do next, because you can build in warnings and slower handovers, and you cannot lecture anybody out of a capacity limit.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'God wishes to lighten your burden; man was created weak' (Quran 4:28). Limits in what a person can carry are spoken of as part of how we are made, not as a fault to be told off for.
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُخَفِّفَ عَنكُمۡۚ وَخُلِقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ ضَعِيفࣰ ا

What the research says
Part of why this gets missed is that the quieter, internal side of attention difficulty does not appear on the usual checklists. A literature review of mind wandering in ADHD found excessive internal distractibility consistently associated with ADHD symptoms and largely invisible to observers and rating scales. That review looked at mind wandering rather than at rigidity, so it is a neighbouring finding, but it makes the same point about what checklists fail to capture.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Swapping one set of rules for another takes effort that is in short supply here, so the old rule stays running.
When not to
Marked rigidity alongside narrow interests and early social difficulty is worth an autism assessment rather than an ADHD explanation on its own.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Assessing a child's thinking used to mean a referral, a waiting list and a report some months later. Brief cognitive tools an ordinary clinician can run have changed that, and the gap between noticing something and having a plan can now be a session rather than a season.
Ask what they think this will cost them in effort, then say what you think. People rarely give up because a strategy failed. They give up because it turned out to be harder than anyone had told them.
Not all distraction comes from outside. Some of it is a thought that will not leave, circling while you read the same paragraph four times.
