Being given a medicine that holds no licence for your condition can feel like being experimented on. Usually it means the evidence is decent but thinner than a licence demands.

Bupropion is the common case. It helps some people with attention difficulties, often alongside a stimulant, and it never gained the indication, so no company may advertise it for this. Prescribing it anyway is lawful and ordinary. What you can fairly ask is why this one for you, what an improvement would look like, and when the two of you will review it.

Before you use this

This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Do not follow blindly what you do not know to be true' (Quran 17:36). It cuts both ways here: do not refuse the medicine on rumour, and do not take it without asking what it is for.

Do not follow blindly what you do not know to be true: ears, eyes, and heart, you will be questioned about all these

What the research says

A Cochrane review of bupropion in adults with ADHD found a modest reduction in symptoms and rated the evidence low certainty, since the trials were few and small. A separate review in children and adolescents found some benefit for those who did not respond to stimulants or could not tolerate them, again from small studies. Modest and uncertain is the fair summary, and that is a different thing from absent.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

A licence governs what may be marketed, while prescribing follows the evidence and the person in the room.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
