Unmanaged ADHD wrecks sleep, food and movement, and wrecked sleep, food and movement make the attention worse the next day. The loop feeds itself, which is also the hopeful part: a small repair anywhere in it pays back more than it should.

Short sleep hits the same front part of the brain that is already struggling, so a late night costs you more than it costs other people. Pick the one link nearest to being fixable, usually the hour of going to bed, and leave the rest for now. Trying to overhaul sleep, food and exercise in the same week is how the whole thing gets dropped by Thursday.

This explains how treatments work. Never start, stop or change a medication because of something you read here.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Eat and drink, but do not be extravagant' (Quran 7:31), said in the same verse as dressing well for worship. Ordinary care of the body is treated as part of religious life rather than a distraction from it.

Children of Adam, dress well whenever you are at worship, and eat and drink [as We have permitted] but do not be extravagant: God does not like extravagant people

What the research says

What surrounds a treatment can matter as much as the treatment. In the long term follow up of a large childhood ADHD trial, it was childhood clinical and family factors rather than which treatment a child had been assigned to that predicted adult functional outcomes. That is an observational analysis sitting inside a trial, so it shows what travelled alongside better outcomes rather than what caused them. It is still a fair reason to take the ordinary things seriously next to the prescription.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

In a loop, a change at any one point comes back round and helps the other points too.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
