Areas › Low mood and hard feelings › Emotions as signals
When someone finally gets one true word out about how they feel, resist explaining it to them. Ask what that word is like from the inside and let them find the rest.
The temptation is to say the clever thing: of course you felt rejected, anyone would. It is often accurate and it usually ends the moment, because now the two of you are discussing an idea instead of staying near the feeling. Stay with their word. 'Hard' is plenty to work with, and whatever they build out of it will mean more to them than your version ever could.
Qur’an and Sunnah
'God knows everything that is in your hearts, whether you conceal or reveal it' (Quran 3:29). What is inside another person is fully known by God and only partly guessed at by you.
Say [Prophet], ‘God knows everything that is in your hearts, whether you conceal or reveal it; He knows everything in the heavens and earth; God has power over all things.’

What the research says
A large review of the evidence on facial expression concluded that although people do sometimes smile when happy or scowl when angry, the correspondence is far too loose to read an emotion off a face with any confidence. Its subject was expression rather than conversation, so the transfer is not exact. The caution still carries: your read of what another person is feeling is a guess, and a noisy one, which is a good reason to ask instead of announce.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Meaning a person arrives at themselves stays attached to the feeling, while meaning handed to them gets filed away as a fact.
When not to
If someone is too distressed to speak at all, offer steadiness first; questions can wait.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Say the frightened thing rather than the sharp thing. It is far more exposing and it is the only version that tends to get a kind reply.
You do not have to reflect back everything a person just told you. Pick up the part that carries the weight and say that much.
Watch for the swerve. Right after something tender gets said, along comes a story about a brother or a colleague or a thing from years ago, and the tender part quietly gets left behind.
