Notice if one of you chases and one retreats, and name that gently.
The more I push, the more you pull back, and round it goes. See the loop, out loud.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Repel evil with what is better, and enmity turns to warmth (Qur'an 41:34). A gentler move breaks the loop the harsh one feeds.
Good and evil cannot be equal. [Prophet], repel evil with what is better and your enemy will become as close as an old and valued friend

What the research says
The commonest painful pattern is one partner pressing and the other pulling away, each move driving the other. Seeing the loop is the start of leaving it.
Johnson, S.M. (2019). Attachment Theory in Practice: Emotionally Focused Therapy with Individuals, Couples, and Families. Guilford
The originator's account of EFT as attachment-based practice.
Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Naming the pursue-withdraw loop shows both partners how each move feeds the other.
Where this sits: EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), attachment-based couple intervention.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
