Reflect your partner's feeling back to them in simple, slow, soft words, using their own words where you can.
Empathic reflection, gently naming and mirroring back what your partner is feeling, tells them they are not alone in it. Keep it slow, simple, and warm rather than clever or corrective.
Qur’an and Sunnah
Speak to him gently, so that he may take heed (Quran 20:44). A soft, slow, gentle voice is the very manner the reflection calls for, and the manner in which a heart takes something in.
فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوۡلࣰ ا لَّيِّنࣰ ا لَّعَلَّهُۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوۡ يَخۡشَىٰ
Speak to him gently so that he may take heed, or show respect.’

What the research says
The most basic and powerful move in emotionally focused therapy is empathic reflection: naming and mirroring a partner's emotion back to them, slowly and softly, in their own words. It creates safety, slows the racing exchange, and helps the person feel their experience is witnessed rather than judged.
Johnson, S. M., Hunsley, J., Greenberg, L. S. and Schindler, D. (1999). Emotionally focused couples therapy: Status and challenges. Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice doi
A meta-analysis of the most rigorous outcome studies found emotionally focused therapy produced a large effect on relationship distress, with roughly 70 to 75 percent of couples recovering.
Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
Slow, soft, simple reflection of a partner's emotion creates a felt sense of safety that lets deeper feeling emerge.
Where this sits: EFT, most basic intervention: empathic reflection (RISSSC).
