Even ten percent. I was harsh, that was on me. Ownership without defence lets them soften.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Adam and his wife prayed, our Lord, we have wronged ourselves (Qur'an 7:23). Owning your part is the beginning of every repair.

They replied, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged our souls: if You do not forgive us and have mercy, we shall be lost.’

What the research says

Defensiveness keeps a conflict alive by bouncing the problem back. Taking your share, cleanly and without excuse, is what breaks the cycle.

Gottman, J.; Coan, J.; Carrere, S.; Swanson, C. (1998). Predicting Marital Happiness and Stability from Newlywed Interactions. Journal of Marriage and the Family doi

Newlywed interaction patterns; accepting influence; soft start-up.

Strength of evidence: research links. Replicated observational or longitudinal work.

Why it works

Taking responsibility disarms defensiveness and opens the door to repair.
