Some situations do not move, and accepting that is itself a way of coping rather than a failure to cope.

Fighting an unchangeable thing adds a second layer of suffering on top of the first. Acceptance here does not mean approval or giving up on care. It means putting down the part of the struggle that was never going to work, so that what strength you have goes somewhere useful. Knowing which situations call for pushing and which call for softening is most of the skill.

Qur’an and Sunnah

Musa's mother is told to put him in the river and 'do not be afraid, and do not grieve' (Quran 28:7). She is asked to let go of the very thing she cannot control, and the letting go is the act of trust.

We inspired Moses’ mother, saying, ‘Suckle him, and then, when you fear for his safety, put him in the river: do not be afraid, and do not grieve, for We shall return him to you and make him a messenger.’

What the research says

A meta analysis of randomised trials found massage reduced cancer pain, with the authors noting that blinding is impossible in such trials and quality was uneven. It is worth reading in this context: comfort offered in situations where the underlying illness is not going anywhere. Relief and cure are separate things, and the first is still worth having.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Struggle against what cannot move costs energy and changes nothing, so letting it go returns the energy.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
