Picture somewhere peaceful and then walk in it. Feel the ground under each foot, your legs moving, and count the steps up to twenty.

The counting keeps you there instead of drifting off, and the feet are the important part. A calm scene that stays a picture in your head does very little, while a calm scene you can feel from the knees down does rather more. Sand, grass, a carpeted hallway, a path you knew as a child: any of it works, so long as your body is in it.

Qur’an and Sunnah

'Do not worry: your Lord has provided a stream at your feet' (Quran 19:24). Maryam is directed downwards, to something real and near, at the moment the fear is loudest.

فَنَادَىٰهَا مِن تَحۡتِهَآ أَلَّا تَحۡزَنِي قَدۡ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحۡتَكِ سَرِيࣰّ ا

but a voice cried to her from below, ‘Do not worry: your Lord has provided a stream at your feet

What the research says

A meta analysis of non drug ways of improving sleep after cardiac surgery, including massage and aromatherapy, found improvements, though the differences between the trials pooled were large. Quiet, low cost, self applied practices can shift how a body settles. Sleep after surgery is not the same as a guided walk in an imagined place, and no trial there tested imagery of this kind.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.

Why it works

Attention in your legs and feet keeps you attached to the ground while your mind rests somewhere kinder.

This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
