Being able to disappear into something for six hours does not cancel the diagnosis out. Getting stuck on and getting stuck off are the same switch failing in two directions.
People often use their own absorption as evidence against themselves, or a family member uses it against them: if you can play that game all night, you could do the accounts. What is actually happening is that the switch which moves attention on when the task changes is unreliable, so interest holds you longer than you meant and dullness cannot hold you at all. Watch the cost too, since the hours that vanish usually come out of sleep, meals, or somebody waiting.

And in yourselves too, do you not see (Quran 51:21). Looking honestly at how your own attention behaves, in both directions, is treated there as something worth studying.

What the research says
A review of brain imaging in ADHD reports consistently reduced function across the frontal, cingulate and parietal regions that support attention and cognitive control. That is a review of a network involved in directing attention rather than a study of absorption itself, so it makes the two directions plausible rather than proven.

Strength of evidence: one line of research. A single study, or a theoretical account.
Why it works
The same control system decides both when to hold attention and when to let it go, so when it runs poorly you get both extremes.
This one is still a draft. It is waiting on a scholar and a clinician to read it before it is published.
Near this one
Telling parents that their child's self-management is running behind their age usually brings relief rather than alarm. It names something they had already noticed and had been blaming somebody for.
There is no age at which finding out stops being worth it. People have been diagnosed in their eighties and described it as the first explanation that ever fitted.
Write out your real work history, every job, with why each one ended. In conversation people skip the short ones and the sackings, and that is precisely where the pattern lives.
